Success Story: Success Story of Rukhsana M. Ali

A Journey from Dependency to Independence

Rukhsana M. Ali, a determined and passionate woman from Chungi Amer Siddhu, Lahore, turned her life around through the power of skills development. With the help of HomeNet Pakistan (HNP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), she completed a threemonth certified Dress Making course at VTI Kahna. Her story is a powerful example of how access to vocational education can transform the lives of women and empower entire families

Early Life: A Creative Spirit in a Challenging Environment

Growing up in a lowincome family, Rukhsana always had a strong interest in stitching and dress designing. She would often use leftover fabric to make clothes for her siblings’ dolls or help her mother with basic sewing. But due to financial limitations and lack of access to training, her creativity remained hidden within the four walls of her home.

“Even as a child, I dreamed of having my own stitching shop. But life’s responsibilities always came first,” Rukhsana recalled

Before the Training: Living in Limitation

Before enrolling in the training program, Rukhsana was a fulltime homemaker. She depended on her husband for every financial need and often felt frustrated that she couldn’t support her family in a meaningful way. She had the passion and basic knowledge for tailoring, but no professional skills or certification to attract clients.

“People don’t trust someone without training. Even if I stitched well, I wasn’t seen as a ‘real’ dressmaker,” she said.

A Turning Point: Discovering the HNP and UNDP Training Program

Rukhsana’s turning point came when she attended a community meeting organized by HomeNet Pakistan, where she learned about a free certified Dress Making course at VTI Kahna. With support from UNDP, this program aimed to empower women through skill development. Excited and hopeful, Rukhsana registered for the coursewithout hesitation.

“That day gave me new hope. I felt like I was finally being given the chance to build something for myself,” she shared.

Training at VTI Kahna: Unlocking Potential

During the three-month training, Rukhsana learned professional dressmaking skills including cutting, stitching, body measurement, fabric handling, designing, and finishing techniques. The environment at VTI Kahna was supportive and encouraging, with instructors who patiently guided the women through every step. Rukhsana was among the most dedicated students, never missing a day of training.

“Every day at the center gave me something new—new skills, new confidence, and a new identity,” she proudly stated.

Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

Juggling training with household duties was not easy for Rukhsana. She had to wake up early, prepare meals, take care of her children, and then travel to the training center. There were days when she felt physically exhausted, but the thought of creating a better future kept her going

“It was tough, but I knew these three months could shape the rest of my life. I couldn’t give up,” she said with determination.

Contributing to the Family Income

With her growing business, Rukhsana now contributes to household expenses. She helps with utility bills, children’s school fees, and savings for the future. Her husband and children admire her strength and hard work. The woman who was once dependent now plays a key role in the family’s financial wellbeing

“Now, I feel equal. I don’t need to askI can give. That’s beautiful feeling,” she expressed with pride.

From Learner to Earner: Starting Her Tailoring Business

After successfully completing the course, Rukhsana started her homebased tailoring business. She began by stitching clothes for family and neighbors. As word spread about her neat work, timely delivery, and affordable rates, her client base grew steadily. Today, she takes orders for casual wear, school uniforms, and even party dresses.

“The first time I earned from my stitching, I felt proud like never before. That money had respect in it,” she said.

Gratitude for the Support

Rukhsana credits HomeNet Pakistan and UNDP for giving her that one chance. Their timely support provided her with access to quality training, a certificate that added credibility to her work, and most importantlythe confidence to dream again.

“Without them, I would still be just dreaming. Now, I’m living my dream,” she said gratefully.

Conclusion: Stitching a Brighter Future

From a dependent homemaker to a respected dressmaker and businesswoman, Rukhsana M. Ali’s story is a powerful testament to how skill training can transform lives. Through her dedication and the support of HNP and UNDP, she has stitched not only beautiful clothesbut also a beautiful future, filled with pride, respect, and purpose.
