Success Story: sana khan
Introduction: A Dream Begins with a Brush
Sana Khan, a vibrant and determined woman from Chungi Amer Siddhu, Lahore, always had a passion for beauty and self–care. But like many women in her
community, she lacked the resources and training to turn that passion into a profession. Thanks to the collaboration between HomeNet Pakistan (HNP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Sana completed a three–month certified beautician course at Vocational Training Institute (VTI) Kahna. Her story is a journey of growth, resilience, and transformation.
Life Before the Opportunity: Limited but Hopeful
Before her training, Sana’s life revolved around her home. Financial struggles, family responsibilities, and lack of access to professional training kept her talents hidden. She would occasionally do basic beauty work for friends and relatives, such as threading, henna application, and simple makeup looks, but she was not confident enough to pursue it as a full–time income–generating skill
“I knew I had the talent, but without training and proper tools, I couldn’t grow. I was stuck,” Sana shared.
A Hidden Talent Waiting to Shine
Since her teenage years, Sana had been interested in beauty services. She loved experimenting with makeup, creating hairstyles, and applying mehndi during weddings. Her friends often praised her natural flair for beauty work. But despite her interest, she lacked the technical know–how and formal certification needed to attract paying clients or work in a salon.
Discovering the Beautician Course Through HNP
Sana’s turning point came when she attended a local information session held by HomeNet Pakistan. There, she learned about a free, certified beautician course being offered at VTI Kahna in partnership with UNDP. She immediately saw this as the opportunity she had been waiting for. With encouragement from her family, she enrolled in the course, excited to finally turn her passion into a profession
“I felt like someone had finally opened the door to my dreams,” she said with a smile.
Training at VTI Kahna: A New World of Learning
At VTI Kahna, Sana experienced structured, professional training for the first time in her life. She learned everything from basic skincare and makeup techniques to hair styling, bridal services, manicure/pedicure, hygiene practices, and client communication. The instructors were supportive and guided her with patience and care. Her confidence began to grow with each passing week.
“Every day I felt like I was becoming stronger and more skilled—not just in beauty work but as a person,” Sana recalled.
Balancing Responsibilities with Education
As a woman managing household duties, Sana faced challenges balancing her course schedule with her family obligations. But her determination never wavered. She would wake up early to complete her chores and attend training with full focus. Her perseverance was admired by her peers and trainers alike.
Starting Her Own Home-Based Beauty Services
After receiving her certificate, Sana set up a small beauty corner in her home with minimal equipment. She began offering basic services such as facials, waxing, makeup, and hairstyling to women in her neighborhood. Her quality work, affordable rates, and polite manner helped her quickly build a loyal client base. She started receiving calls for bridal makeup and party services, even outside her area.
“My first bridal client was so happy with my work that she referred me to five others. That moment changed everything for me,” she said
Financial Independence and Confidence
Sana’s earnings now play a significant role in supporting her family. She contributes to her household expenses, pays for her younger sibling’s education, and is saving to expand her beauty services. Most importantly, she now sees herself as a confident, independent woman who is respected both at home and in her community.
Inspiring Women in Chungi Amer Siddhu
Sana’s journey has inspired other young women in her area to explore vocational training. She often shares her experience and encourages others to join similar programs. She dreams of opening a proper beauty salon one day and training other girls who want to follow the same path.
“We all have hidden talents. All we need is someone to believe in us and give us a little push,” she advises.
Gratitude to HNP and UNDP
Sana credits HomeNet Pakistan and UNDP for giving her the opportunity that changed her life. Their program didn’t just provide her with a skill—it gave her dignity, independence, and a new identity. She now believes every woman deserves access to skill–building programs, regardless of her background.
“They gave me the tools to turn my dream into reality. I wil always be thankful,” she said.
Beauty, Bravery, and a Bright Future
Sana is shaping a brighter, more beautiful future—one client at a time.
