Success Story: saman akram

A New Chapter for Saman Akram

Saman Akram, a determined and
ambitious young woman from TLP
Housing Society, Lahore, is a shining
example of how skill development can
transform lives. With the help of HomeNet
Pakistan (HNP) and the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP), she
successfully completed a threemonth
certified computer course at Vocational
Training Institute (VTI) Shalimar. Today,
she stands empowered, selfreliant, and
motivated to make a difference not just for
herself but for other young women in her
community.

Background: Dreams Beyond Boundaries

Saman grew up in a modest household where education was considered
important, but financial constraints often limited her opportunities.
Though she had completed her intermediate education, she felt stuck
unable to access professional skills that could help her move forward. Her
curiosity about technology and desire to contribute to her family’s income
kept growing.

“I knew that digital skills were essential in today’s world. I
just didn’t know how I could learn them without money or
access,” Saman shared.

Life Before Training: Eager but Undirected

Before the training, Saman spent most of her days doing housework,
helping her family, and occasionally assisting her younger siblings with
their studies. Although she had free time, she felt it was going to waste.
She often wished for a chance to use that time productively and develop a
skill that could offer her both purpose and independence.

“Every day felt the same. I had time and energy, but no
direction,” she recalled.

Turning Point: A Life-Changing Opportunity

Saman’s journey took a positive turn when she came across a community
session conducted by HomeNet Pakistan, where she learned about a free
threemonth certified computer course at VTI Shalimar. The course,
supported by UNDP, was designed specifically to equip young women
with essential digital skills. Without hesitation, Saman applied and was
thrilled to be accepted.

“That moment gave me hopeI felt like I had finally found
the path I was searching for,” she said with excitement.

Training at VTI Shalimar: Skills That Empower

During her training at VTI Shalimar, Saman learned a wide range of
practical computer skills. These included Microsoft Office applications
(Word, Excel, PowerPoint), typing, internet browsing, email
communication, and an introduction to freelancing platforms. She
quickly adapted to the digital environment and showed great enthusiasm
in class.

“Every day brought something new. I loved learning and
improving my confidence at the same time,” she said.

Challenges and Commitment

Saman’s biggest challenge was the lack of a personal computer at home.
However, her dedication pushed her to stay longer at the institute, where
she could practice on the lab computers. She also borrowed devices from
classmates whenever possible. Her consistent effort and positive attitude
earned praise from her trainers and peers alike.

“I couldn’t let anything hold me backnot even the lack of
a computer. I knew what I wanted, and I was willing to work
for it,” she explained.

From Learner to Freelancer

After successfully completing the course, Saman began offering typing,
CV formatting, school assignment digitizing, and data entry services
within her neighborhood. She used social media and word of mouth to
market her services and slowly started receiving regular work. With her
first few earnings, she was able to contribute to her household income
and save for her own laptop.

“When I received payment for my first assignment, I felt
proud. That money meant more than just incomeit was
proof of my potential,” she said with pride.

Building Financial Independence

Saman’s small homebased digital service setup has become a steady
source of income. She now contributes to household expenses, manages
her personal needs, and is planning to enroll in an advanced online
graphic design course. Her sense of independence and confidence has
grown immensely, and her family respects her for the progress she’s
made.

A Role Model in Her Community

Saman is now an inspiration to many girls in TLP Housing Society. She
openly shares her journey with others and encourages them to take
advantage of training opportunities. She dreams of starting a small digital
skills training center for girls in her locality, so that more women can
access the same support and empowerment she received.

“If one girl can change her life through learning, imagine
how many more can rise if we support each other,” she said
with hope.

Gratitude for Support from HNP and UNDP

Saman is deeply thankful to HomeNet Pakistan and UNDP for offering
her this opportunity. She believes the training didn’t just teach her how to
use a computerit taught her how to believe in herself and her
capabilities.

“This journey changed my life. I will always be grateful to
HNP and UNDP for helping me find my voice and purpose,”
she expressed sincerely.

A Future Built on Knowledge

From a young woman filled with uncertainty to a confident, self
employed freelancer, Saman Akram’s success story is a powerful
example of how access to education and skills can transform lives. With
the right opportunity, dedication, and community support, Saman not
only found her purpose but is now helping others discover theirs.
