Success Story: saira bano

Breaking Barriers with Technology

Saira Bano, a determined and hopeful woman from TLP Housing Society, Lahore, is a shining example of how access to education and skills training can open new doors in life. With the support of HomeNet Pakistan (HNP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Saira successfully completed a three- month certified computer course through VTI Shalimar. Today, she is digitally literate, earning from home, and empowering other young women in her community.

Life Before the Training: A Quiet Dream

Before she joined the course, Saira’s life revolved around household
responsibilities and caring for her family. Though she had completed her
basic education, she never had the chance to pursue any practical or
technical skill. She had a deep interest in computers but no access to
formal training or the tools required to learn.

“I used to wonder how people worked on computers. I felt
left behind in a world that was moving forward,” Saira
shared.

A Desire for Change and Growth

Saira had always dreamed of being financially independent. Watching
other girls find opportunities online made her feel both inspired and
limited. She wanted to do something meaningful with her time
something that could bring income and dignity to her name. The only
thing she needed was a way in.

“I wanted to learn, to earn, and to feel confident in myself. I
just didn’t know how or where to start,” she said.

The Turning Point: Learning about HNP and UNDP’s Program

Her life took a positive turn when a relative told her about a free certified
computer course at VTI Shalimar, organized in collaboration with
HomeNet Pakistan and UNDP. The course was designed especially for
women and girls who lacked access to digital learning but were eager to
gain employable skills. Encouraged by her family, Saira enrolled without
hesitation.

“It felt like someone had heard my silent prayers. I was
finally going to learn what I had always dreamed of,” she
said with excitement.

Training Experience at VTI Shalimar

Over the three months, Saira learned essential digital skills including MS
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, typing, email communication, internet
browsing, and an introduction to freelancing platforms. The teachers
were encouraging, and the environment was friendly and respectful,
which made it easy for her to participate and grow in confidence.

“At first I was nervous even to turn on the computer. But by
the end of the course, I was designing resumes and typing
professional documents,” she proudly recalled.

Facing Challenges Head-On

One of the biggest challenges Saira faced was the lack of a computer at
home. Without a personal device, she had to stay back at the training
center to practice or borrow time on a friend’s computer. But her
dedication and hunger to learn helped her push through.

“I told myself: no excuses. If I want to change my life, I
have to make it happen no matter how hard it gets,” she said
with determination.

From Learner to Earner

After completing her course, Saira began offering typing, data entry,
and document formatting services from home. She reached out to
school teachers, students, and small businesses in her area who needed
help preparing reports and digital documents. Her reputation for neat and
timely work quickly grew, and so did her client list.

“The first time I earned from my computer skills, I felt
powerful. It was a small amount, but it meant the world to
me,” she shared.

Supporting Her Family and Gaining Respect

Today, Saira contributes to her household expenses. Whether it’s buying
groceries, paying bills, or supporting her younger siblings’ education, she
plays an active role in her family’s financial stability. Her parents and
siblings look at her with pride, and she feels more confident and valued
than ever before.

“I’m no longer just someone who helps at home. I am a
working woman, and that title gives me immense joy,” she
said.

Becoming a Digital Role Model

Saira is now an inspiration to many other girls in TLP Housing Society.
She guides them on how to enroll in courses, talks about freelancing, and
encourages them to gain skills. Her goal is to open a small community
center in the future where she can teach basic computer skills to girls who
cannot afford formal training.

“Every girl deserves to know how to use a computer. It’s not
just a machineit’s a gateway to freedom,” she said
passionately.

Gratitude to HNP and UNDP

Saira is deeply grateful to HomeNet Pakistan and UNDP for offering
such a lifechanging opportunity. She believes their initiative didn’t just
teach her a skillit changed her identity. She now walks with confidence
and speaks with purpose
“They gave me knowledge, but more than that, they gave me
a new life. I will always be thankful,” she expressed
emotionally.

Conclusion: Saira’s Story of Strength and Success

From a girl with limited resources and a big dream to a confident,
independent, and digitally skilled professional, Saira Bano’s journey is a
story of success, hope, and empowerment. Thanks to HNP and UNDP’s
timely support, she is now not only earning from home but also uplifting
others around her. Her journey reminds us all that with the right
