Asma Nadeem and her husband lived in a small village in Punjab, where she worked in the fields picking cotton while her husband operated a handcart. Their circumstances changed when her brother-in-law in Lahore, who ran a successful breakfast cart, invited
themtolivewithhis familyandlearnhis trade.
While staying with her brother-in-law, Asma worked tirelessly at night to learn how to make chickpeas, naan, and other breakfast items, while her husband sold them in the morning. Despite their hard work, Asma found herself doing all the household chores while her brother-in-law and his wife did not contribute to either the business or house chores. After months of learning, they decided it was time to venture out on their own.
Setting up their own cart, they began selling breakfast items on the road. Although the initial days were slow, within three months, their business flourished. They saved enough to rent a shop in the market and even renovated their home. However, their dreams were soon shattered when Asma’s husband was diagnosed with TB, requiring costly medical treatment that depleted their savings.
To make ends meet, Asma took up work as a maid in houses and hospitals, ensuring that her children had food on the table.
Asma Nadeem’s journey to entrepreneurship began during her time working as a housemaid, where she would often receive clothes to stitch from the women she worked for. Her sewing skills gradually improved, and she started receiving more orders. It was during this period that she learned about HomeNet Pakistan (HNP) and their support for home-based workers.
She attended a meeting by HNP and learned about the Financial Inclusion of Home based Workers’ Enterprises through Business Booster Loan and Trainings (FBLT)program. This initiative aimed to empower female entrepreneurs through mentorship and helped them connect with financial services to acquire loans for purchasing raw materials, equipment,or expanding operations.
Inspired by the opportunity, she enrolled in FBLT and started its Foundation Level Training. This training was transformative, teaching her the fundamentals of running a business. She learned the importance of branding, workflow tracking, bookkeeping, pricing strategies, time management, and emotional stability. These skills not only helped her increase profits but also boosted her confidence and negotiation abilities.
Asma initially started her tailoring business by stitching suits and dresses. However, she soon discovered her knack for tailoring ladies’ trousers. However, to organize her working process, she needed financial resources. This is where she sought the support of HNP to access FBLT’s business booster loan. HNP connected her with HBL Microfinance Bank, assisted in opening her bank account, helped her prepare the necessary documents, and after due diligence, the bank granted her a loan of PKR 100,000. With this amount, Asma converted a space in her house into a tailoring unit. Her expertise in stitching trousers attracted attention from factories and wholesale markets. They began sending her fabric in bulk, which she would then stitch, pack, and send back to them. This streamlined process allowed her to efficiently handle large orders.
Asma’s journey from a housemaid stitching clothes for others to the founder of the Iram Shahzadi Unit is a testament to entrepreneurial spirit and determination.
Before her training with HNP, Asma used to spend all her earnings on daily expenses, without a clear understanding of her income and expenditure. However, the Foundation Level Training taught her the importance of financial management. She now separates her expenses from her income, sets aside profit, and allocates a portion for expenditure, while also saving for the future. This shift in
Mindset has significantly improved her financial stability and business acumen.
Asma’s journey from relying on her neighbours for support to saving around PKR 50,000 per month is a testament to her perseverance and hard work. With her improved financial situation, she was able to purchase a washing machine, refrigerator, and TV for her children, significantly improving their quality of life within just a year.
Her eldest son’s interest in learning shoe making and his plans to join her in the business show cases the impact of Asma’s entrepreneurial spirit on her family. Together, they envision expanding their tailoring unit into a small factory where she will focus on stitching ladies’ trousers while her son manufactures shoes inbulk.
Asma’s aspirations include buying her own house and establishing her factory. However, her plans extend beyond personal success; she aims to employ people from her community, providing them with much-needed financial stability. Her desire to pass on her knowledge and empower others reflects her commitment to community development.
