Case Studies Of Baby Anum

Baby Anum is a 19-year-old unmarried young woman currently living in Baldia Town, Karachi. She is pursuing her Intermediate studies, and her final exams are underway. Coming from a humble background, her father, Allah Diwaya, works as a labourer and earns PKR 30,000 per month, which is barely enough to meet the family’s basic needs. Anum works as a school teacher during the day and also takes on home-based stitching work in her spare time to support her education and personal expenses. However, despite all her efforts, she struggled with financial challenges, especially when it came to continuing her studies and planning her future career. Her income from stitching was limited, and she lacked the skills and confidence to grow her small-scale work into a sustainable source of income. With the support of UNDP and HomeNet Pakistan (HNP), Anum got the opportunity to enroll in a vocational training program focused on basic stitching and fabric designing. Her course fee and transportation expenses were fully covered, and she received her travel allowance through a cash app, which not only helped ease the burden of commute but also enabled her to learn money management and digital skills—something she had not experienced before. Throughout the training, she gained new insights into designing, tailoring, marketing, and small business management, and she learned how to sell her work online. These new skills gave her the confidence to improve the quality of her stitching, add creative touches to her designs, and gradually expand her customer base beyond her local neighborhood. While her teaching salary remains fixed, Anum has seen a significant 50% increase in her stitching income. Her unique and well-finished designs have attracted more customers, and she now feels hopeful about saving for her higher education and building a secure future. Anum is committed to her learning journey and wishes to stay connected with HomeNet Pakistan. She is also planning to enroll in a computer course, such as Microsoft Office, to strengthen her skills and explore broader opportunities in both education and self-employment. Her ultimate goal is to become financially independent and support her family while achieving her dreams of a meaningful career.
